The Hebrew and Greek behind every word, on iPhone and iPad
Lamp & Line sets out any verse of the Berean Standard Bible word by word, with the Hebrew, Aramaic or Greek each English word translates. It is on your device, so it works offline, and it collects nothing.
The Bible is free. Word study is part of Lamp & Line Full: one purchase, never a subscription.
What you see when you tap a verse
- Every word of the original, as it stands in the Hebrew or Greek, listed in the order of the English you just read.
- How it is said, in a transliteration you can read aloud without knowing the alphabet.
- The English the translators gave it, so you can see which word became “loved” and which became “world”. A word the translation does not render on its own, like the Greek article, says so.
- Its grammar, spelled out: “Verb – Aorist Indicative Active – 3rd Person Singular” rather than a code to look up.
Tap a word and it opens its dictionary entry: the word’s dictionary form, a gloss and a short definition. Beneath that are the ways the BSB renders the word across the whole Bible, and every place it occurs.
Where it comes from
Nothing here is generated. The words come from the tables the BSB’s translators published beside their text: one row for each of the 443,625 original-language words in its 31,086 verses, with the word, its transliteration, its parsing and the English they set for it. They are public domain, like the translation (berean.bible).
The dictionary entries are STEP Bible’s brief lexicons for Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, from work at Tyndale House, Cambridge, used under CC BY 4.0 and credited under every list. There is no AI in it and no commentary. The app says so where you read it: a dictionary describes a word; it does not say what a passage means.
Questions people ask
Is this an interlinear Bible?
For study, yes: each verse can be opened word by word, each original word with the English it became beneath it. You read the English page as usual and open a verse’s words when you want them, rather than reading a printed interlinear page.
Which languages does it cover?
Hebrew and Aramaic for the Old Testament, Greek for the New, for the whole Bible.
Does it need a connection?
No. The tables and the lexicons are built into the app, so word study works on a plane or with every network switched off. Nothing you look up leaves your device.
Is it on Apple Watch?
No. Word study is on iPhone and iPad, where there is room for it. The Watch is for reading.
Free, and what Full adds
On iPhone and iPad the complete BSB, search, read aloud, bookmarks, whole-verse highlights, notes, a daily Psalm, reading and prayer, and a reading plan (the New Testament, or the whole Bible in a year) cost nothing, for good. Without Full, each verse still shows you one of its words in the original, said and in English, so you can see what word study is before you decide. Lamp & Line Full is one purchase, never a subscription. It adds word study, threads between related passages, every reading style, every share-card design, as many reading plans as you like, and the whole Bible on Apple Watch.
